Firearms, Protection, and Threat Response

The Carrying Concealed Deadly Weapons (CCDW) program allows citizens to carry a concealed weapon with a permit. DOCJT prepares trainers and instructors who teach CCDW courses across the commonwealth and provides applicants proof of training through certification before obtaining their permit through the licensing agency, Kentucky State Police.

Defensive Handgun Foundations
Duration: 1 Day
Range: 0–25 yards
Location: KY or WV
This course establishes safe, effective handgun fundamentals for defensive use. Instruction focuses on mindset, marksmanship, draw stroke, reloads, malfunctions, movement, and decision-making under stress.
Designed for:
Civilians, new defensive shooters, refresher students
Defensive Handgun – Advanced
Duration: 2 Days
Range: 0–50 yards
Location: KY or WV
Advanced handgun skills emphasizing efficiency, accountability, and real-world application. Students will work from concealment, shoot on the move, engage multiple targets, and operate under time and cognitive stress.
Prerequisite: Defensive Handgun Foundations or equivalent experience
Designed for: Experienced civilian shooters, LE, security professionals
Defensive Carbine / Rifle
Duration: 2 Days
Range: 25–100 yards (KY) / up to 400 yards (WV)
Focused on defensive rifle employment including zeroing, positional shooting, transitions, use of cover, movement, and threat discrimination. Emphasis is placed on realistic application rather than competition shooting.
Designed for: Civilians, LE, rural property owners
Active Threat & Counter-Terror Response
Duration: 2 Days
Range: Mixed (live-fire + dry)
This course focuses on recognizing, responding to, and surviving active threat events. Topics include movement, cover utilization, decision-making under stress, team coordination, and post-incident considerations. We also look at how to plan for special circumstances like special needs individuals, multiple levels, limiting entrances and exits, where to place security personnel, etc.

Protective Security / PSD Fundamentals
Duration: 2-3 Days
Instruction in protective security principles including formations, movement, arrivals and departures, threat mitigation, and emergency response. Incorporates firearms handling, tactical movement to protect the Principle, and situational awareness.

Close Quarters Battle (CQB) Tactics
Duration: 2–3 Days

Close Quarters Battle (CQB) is the art and science of operating in confined spaces where threats are close, time is compressed, and decisions carry immediate consequences. This course is designed to develop the mindset, communication, and tactical skillset required to move, fight, and survive in structures.
Students will be introduced to proven CQB principles drawn from military, law enforcement, and high-threat operational environments. Emphasis is placed on deliberate movement, threat identification, and the disciplined use of angles, cover, and fields of fire.
Training Methodology:
This is a progressive, hands-on course utilizing dry-fire, force-on-target drills, and scenario-based training. Students will build from foundational skills to increasingly complex problem sets designed to simulate real-world environments.
Precision Rifle Fundamentals
Duration: 2 Days
Range: 100–400 yards
Location: WV
Precision shooting at extended distances requires more than just a capable rifle and quality ammunition. This course teaches shooters how to understand external ballistics, gather accurate performance data, and build reliable firing solutions for long-range engagements.
This course introduces precision rifle fundamentals including ballistics, data management, positional stability, wind reading, distance estimations, scope fundamentals, Cold Bore vs Clean Cold Bore, and target engagement out to 400 yards. Instruction is grounded in sniper doctrine adapted for civilian and professional contexts.
Students will learn how environmental conditions, bullet design, velocity, and distance interact to affect projectile flight. The course focuses on practical ballistic application—how to collect real-world data, interpret ballistic calculators, and build dependable DOPE (Data On Previous Engagements) for consistent hits at distance. Participants will gain the knowledge needed to confidently manage ballistic data, verify rifle performance, and make accurate corrections for wind, range, and environmental changes.

Long-Range Precision Rifle & Applied Fieldcraft
